One of the most important things an arts student can do is take advantage of all the opportunities we have on campus to showcase their skills. As we head towards the end of the semester, opportunities abound. From art galleries to recitals to screenings, there are many events, often free, that one can attend to support our students.
From the Art Department, we have three different art shows. Currently, the Senior Exhibition is up in the North Commons Gallery on campus through April 7, for the Bachelor of Fine Arts students. The show features Ckaz Dean, Abigail Joy, Noelle Kershaw, Sicily Stam, and Lily Whetzel. That will be followed by “Through Our Eyes” the show for the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science seniors. It will also take place in the North Commons Gallery. That opens April 10 with a reception at 6 to 8 p.m. and runs through April 29. “Through Our Eyes” will feature Arlie Wyant, River Halley, Ellie Lofting, Malea Shelline, Amelia Stringham, Thyme Powell, and Morgan Webster.
That is not all! The Art Department and the Sears Art Museum will be hosting their annual “UT Art Department Showcase” with both students and faculty in the exhibit. It is an exciting chance for students to gain experience being in a professional art museum as well as for the community to be able to see what the arts have been creating. It is also an opportunity for students to sell their art. The showcase is from April 17 to May 8, museum hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free admission.
The Dance Department has three performances for their students in April. The first of these is their Student Dance Concert on April 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Eccles Mainstage. Tickets may be purchased for $10 general admission. “The Student Dance Concert showcases original choreography created and performed by Utah Tech Dance students. Featuring a range of styles and creative voices, the concert highlights student exploration, collaboration, and artistic growth through performance. This annual event provides students with the opportunity to develop choreographic and performance skills in a fully produced concert setting and offers audiences a glimpse into the creative work happening within the Utah Tech Dance program.” Their second performance is Ballroom Dance Company in Concert on April 23 and 24 also at 7:30 p.m. in the Eccles Mainstage. “The talented students of the Utah Tech Ballroom Dance Company are excited to present their Spring Concert…” Tickets may be purchased for $15 general admission in person or to livestream the show. The final performance is the Dance Forward Class Showing on April 28 at 5:30 p.m. in the Eccles Mainstage with free admission.
Film students spend a good part of the semester working on their student films. Whether they were a camera operator, gaffer, director, editor, or one of the many other roles on a set, they collaborate to create these amazing films. At the end of the year, they all get to be screened for the first time. This event is free and on May 2 in the Eccles Mainstage starting at 2 p.m. and going until 9 p.m. with more details to follow.
Music is a wide and varied art form and its Department is no different with over 15 final concerts for students to showcase their work. They are all in the Eccles Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. with free admission, unless otherwise specified. A full list of events with details is included at the end of the article. Most of these will be livestreamed on the Music Department’s YouTube channel.
Don’t count out Theatre! Though their Spring production, Tristan & Yseult, is done, they still have one more event before the semester is over. Their students are getting together for their 72 Hour Play Festival. Four teams will be writing, producing, and performing original 15-minute one-act plays in, you guessed it, 72 hours. They will receive their theme prompt at the start of their time. It’s a fun way to collaborate and push creativity. They will perform their short plays at 7:30 p.m. on April 11 in the Eccles Black Box Theatre.
Be sure to catch these talented students and their work before summer break!
