It is a new school year and things are already moving in the arts! Students have arrived again to learn, create, and leave their mark.
Even before the semester officially started, the halls were filled with students practicing their instruments. The marching band had their camp, gearing up to perform at games and hype up their fellow Trailblazers. Rehearsals for concerts and showcases are already underway.
On the first two days of classes, the Dance department offered students the opportunity to “try before you decide.” Any student could show up to a dance class and give it a whirl before deciding if they wanted to register for the class. This encouraged students to expand their repertoire and see if something different interested them. From ballet to jazz to modern to ballroom, students were able to try just about every type of dance offered. Dance also held auditions for their Dance Ensemble, a performing group and class.
Art is already laying paint down and carving clay. The North Commons Gallery currently displays a variety of artwork by our faculty, showcasing to students what their professors are capable of. There are flyers posted around campus calling for submissions for Halloween art, a themed show which will follow after the faculty show. The Sears Art Museum opens their first exhibit of the school year on Sept. 4, Daniel Rays: Found / Framed, with the foyer exhibit showcasing local Washington City Arts Council.
Theatre students practiced lines as they headed into auditions for the big stage production of the semester, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. They prepared by memorizing monologues, reading up on the play, and signing up for an audition slot. The cast list should be announced soon! There is also preparation for a mini show this month, a 24-hour play festival.
This week, the Film department is offering free headshots to anyone in the community, alongside auditions for their future film projects. It is a great opportunity to connect with people who may appear on screen in the future. DOCUTAH’s Best of Fest at Kayenta is starting this month on Sept. 4, showcasing a film from last year’s DOCUTAH Film Festival each month.
It is so exciting to see how quickly things get rolling again on campus!
